Challenge

Belching Beaver wanted a feature with presence from day one for a big, open venue visited by locals and tourists, not a wall that would take months to grow in.

Results

About 360 plants across a roughly 20 by 8 foot wall looked complete from day one, and better than ever nearly 18 months later. The client added goldfish to the catch tank, to customers' delight, and the wall remains a popular selfie backdrop.

Belching Beaver, San Diego

Belching Beaver is a pub and brewery venue in San Diego, visited by locals and tourists alike. Its living wall was the first greenwall GrowUp sold in San Diego, with plant selection and ongoing maintenance by partner Greenleaf IPS.

The Challenge

Belching Beaver's venue was a big, echoey space. Rooms like that are a familiar problem in restaurants and bars: ambient noise builds, echoes carry, and guests find it harder to settle in and relax.

The venue also needed something with presence. A feature that would take months to fill out was not the answer for a pub that draws both locals and tourists. Whatever went on the wall had to look right from the moment it was installed.

The Solution

The answer was a GrowUp living wall, the first greenwall we sold in San Diego. It measures roughly 20 feet by 8 feet and holds around 360 plants.

A finished wall from day one

Our living wall system does not rely on a long grow-in period. The wall is planted to look complete at installation, so the venue had its full effect on day one. A time-lapse of the wall being built and installed shows that instant effect.

The right partner for plants and care

We partnered with Greenleaf IPS, who handled the plant selection and took on the ongoing maintenance. A living wall is only as good as the care it receives, and that partnership has been a success for everyone involved: the venue, Greenleaf IPS and GrowUp.

A custom catch tank

The wall drains into a custom catch tank built by the project's contractor.

The Results

The greenwall transformed the space into a fun and distinctive place to visit. It noticeably reduced the noise in the room, which lets guests relax. Planting dampens ambient noise and softens the echoes that large hospitality spaces often struggle with.

It has also lasted. Photographs taken nearly 18 months after installation show the wall looking better than ever, and it has become a focal point of the venue. After the wall was installed, the client added goldfish to the catch tank, much to the delight of customers. The wall is also an impressive backdrop for guests' photos. In the words of Sheldon Cohen, owner of Greenleaf IPS, the wall still earns rave reviews after four years and remains a popular selfie spot in the brewery.
