Office Building, Orange County, California

The owner of a new office building in Orange County, California, with other properties in their portfolio. The living wall sits on the exterior at the front of the building.

The Challenge

On October 2, 2019, a client in Orange County, California called us about the front of their new office building. They wanted a living wall of succulents on the exterior: low maintenance, and there to beautify the face the building shows to the street. They sent us one inspiration image, photos of the planned space and its dimensions.

The Solution

From first call to proposal

Working from the client's photos and dimensions, we developed a plan and a proposal for the wall. The client chose the planting from our succulent plant guide. By October 11 they had decided to move forward, and installation was set for November 4.

Delivered ready to hang

We delivered the plants to site already transplanted into the wall's pots and bags, which kept the time and mess of transplanting off the job site. The client has their own contracting team and chose to use it for the installation, so we briefed that team by phone before work began. By the end of the second day the wall was very close to completion, with the surrounding trim left for the client's contractor to finish.

Automated irrigation

The wall is watered by a fully automated irrigation system, specified to keep the succulents healthy for years to come.

The Results

Two weeks after installation, the planting had already changed character. The color of the succulents had transformed completely, a clear sign that the plants had settled into their new position and were thriving.

The finished wall exceeded the expectations of the original brief, in both how it looks and how quickly it was delivered. The client was impressed enough that we began discussions about replicating the project across their other properties.
