Things to Consider
Custom Living Plant Walls
Choosing a System
Consider the following:
Access to water and drainage.
Height and maintenance access.
Indoor or outdoor.
Infrastructure Requirements
Consider the weight of a greenwall. Plants, water, and the system itself will put weight on the supporting wall. The base wall will need to support 18 lbs per square foot. Consider reinforcing the wall prior to installation.
Watering Systems
Greenwall systems can be plumbed into the main water supply for watering and drainage. Alternatively, greenwalls can be completely self-contained using water tanks and integrated technology to supply water to the plants.
Lighting Requirements
Indoor greenwalls often require additional lighting to ensure the health and longevity of the plants. Grow lights can be installed in the ceiling to ensure adequate lighting and provide the additional benefit of acting like a spotlight to show off your wall.
Plant Choices
Plant choices are important for both indoor and outdoor greenwalls. The most important element to think about is choosing a variety of plants with the same water and climate requirements. The entire wall will receive the same maintenance, meaning all plants selected should require the same maintenance.
Choosing plants that grow effectively in your climate is important for outdoor walls. For example, succulents are an effective choice for warmer climates and walls that receive direct sunlight.
Indoor walls offer more flexibility in plant selection due to the controlled environment. Take a look at our comprehensive plant guide to aid in your decision-making.

Got A Question?
What types of plants can be used in a custom living wall?
We select plant species based on your space’s light levels, humidity, and design goals. Popular choices include pothos, ferns, philodendrons, and tropicals, but we can also incorporate herbs, succulents, or native plants for indoor or outdoor use.
Do living walls need direct sunlight?
Not necessarily. Many living walls thrive under indirect or low light with the help of grow lights. We assess your space during the design process and recommend lighting solutions if needed.
How are living walls irrigated?
Our living walls feature built-in irrigation systems that automate watering and drainage. They can be self-contained or connected to existing plumbing for clean and effortless maintenance.
How often do living walls need to be maintained?
With automated irrigation, maintenance is minimal; however, walls should be checked at least every two weeks to make sure the watering system is in working order. Most walls need monthly pruning and plant checks. We offer maintenance plans to keep your wall thriving year-round.
Can I add a living wall to an existing wall structure?
Yes! Most structural walls are able to support the weight of a living greenwall. The weight-bearing wall will need to be able to support around 18 lbs per square foot of greenwall.
Are living walls eco-friendly?
Absolutely. Living walls help filter indoor air, regulate temperature, reduce noise, and contribute to LEED and WELL building certifications.
